Heavy CV takeoffs(howto)

I've seen a number of people squeaking about the f4u being hard to take off from a carrier.  It's really quite easy once you get some practice.

The F6F willl take off with a couple of notches of flaps, and wep.

The F4U-1C/D are a bit more tricky.  To take off in them, do the following:
1. Turn off autotakeoff(You can do this as you're sitting on the deck)
2. Go to full throttle
3. Turn on wep immediatly
4. Once your plane begins to roll, start dropping flaps untill they're all the way down.
5. Raise your geat the moment your plane leaves the deck.
6. Now you're flying a brick.  Don't try and climb or turn.  Try and hold the plane level, dont be afraid to lose a bit of alt, just keep the plane level for a moment.
7. After you're flying level, you can start to raise your flaps slowly, and pick up more speed.

Following these steps, you can take off a fully loaded f4u-1d with 100% fuel, 2000lb bombs, and rockets.

I also found backing up a bit on the CV deck helpful.  Takes some practice, but you can get the corsair or hellcat to roll backwards by getting enough rpms to equalize the pressure and let the CV's forward motion & drag on the plane to roll you backwards.  Takes some practice and don't do it if the CV's starting a turn.

backing up is slow though, faster to get airborn learning to takeoff without having to back up.

Great write Innominate....

Just to add something that has helped me get those great beasts up off the deck.. I have found that the want to roll to the left on my off the deck.. If I let the plane roll a bit backing to the left and not try to fight it. seems to work well.. At least for me.. your milage (or airspeed may vary)...  :D

Just use full flaps before engine turned on.

 Works like a charm.

The tendency to roll to the left after leaving the deck can be a killer if you try to correct it using right stick.

The problem is that the aircraft is just about on the verge of a stall and giving it right stick can cause the left wing to stall due to an excessive angle of attack.

Any tendency to roll after leaving the deck should be corrected using rudder, never aileron (at least until the plane's built up some airspeed).

This effect is well known to anyone who flys a real plane and it's nice to see that it's been modelled in here too :-)
